Chapter 20

"Finally, on the road again," Crystal said, looking out the window. They were in some narrow road with nothing but deserted prairies on either side of them. Crystal leaned her head back and closed her eyes.

"Yeah. Now they'll never find us," Nick said.

"Yeah. That sounds so awesome...living on our own, and depending on each other," Crystal said softly.

Half an hour later, the car started sputtering, and the engine died a minute later.

"What the hell?" Nick muttered. He sighed frustratedly. He opened the car door, and went in front of the car, opening the hood.

"Man," Crystal whined. "Why now?"

Nick came back into the car five minutes later. "Well, the carubetor is shot, there's practically no oil in this car, the engine is older than hell, I can bet on anything that that engine didn't come from this car originally. That dealer knew exactly what he was doing. He ripped us off!" Nick cried angrily, his face turning red. He slammed his fists against the steering wheel.

"Damn! And we can't walk back to that damned town. It's too far away, and we're stuck in the middle of nowhere," Nick said. Crystal sighed.

"Oh, no," she moaned. "Now what are we gonna do?"

"I don't know, hon. We better hitch a ride into the next town, and this time, we're gonna have to check more carefully what we buy," Nick said.

"Nick, instead of wasting all that money buying another car, why don't we just go on the bus to wherever we want. It's cheaper, and that way you won't have to drive all night," Crystal suggested. "We can catch a ride to the next town, and from there on, we take a bus."

"Hey, that's a great idea, Crys. I should have thought of that. Let's stay in the car until we see a car come up," Nick said.

"It's so hot, Nick," Crystal complained an hour later. Not a single car had passed by.

"I know, babe. Why don't you change into something more light so you won't be as hot," Nick suggested, eyeing her t-shirt and jeans. "Like a tank or something."

"Okay." Crystal opened the car door, stepped out, and grabbed the car keys from Nick to open the trunk where her suitcase was.

"That's better," she said, a few minutes later. Now she was wearing a tight sky blue tank top, with snug white shorts.

"Baby, if it weren't so hot..." Nick trailed off, staring at Crystal's body. She turned red.

"Oh, come off it, Carter!" she said, laughing. Just then, they heard a car drive up behind them.

"Oh, we weren't even paying attention to any cars! At least they stopped," Nick said, looking in the rearview mirror. He froze.

"Oh, shit," Nick whispered.

"What?" Crystal questioned, turning around. She froze as well when she saw who it was. It was none other than Nick's father and her dad.
